Introduction

One of Chapel Street’s highlight events since 2004 is the Museum of Particularly Bad Art Exhibition, (MOPBA), and the  Itchiball Prize. The success of this exhibition is due to the coming together of Streets Ahead, Chapel St Precinct retailers and the local community, under  the umbrella of the MOPBA Committee.  This event raises significant funds for three charities operating within the City of Stonnington.

Itchiball Entries from past years can be seen here.

About MOPBA

A story about MOBA (Museum of Bad Art, Boston), appeared on ABC TV’s Foreign Correspondent in the early 90’s.  This show had a profound effect on Helen Round at the time she was establishing Fat Helen’s Bric a Brac shop, specializing in the kitsch, inane and tasteless.

Whilst hitting the op shop, garage sale and market trails, she came across Australian examples of Bad Art, and this inspired a lifetime dedication to the pursuit and preservation of excellence in mediocrity.

This collection started as an idea in 1993 and became a reality in 1996, when a portrait of Scott Baio was rescued from the Redland’s Op Shop in High St, Windsor. The shop is now gone but Scott lives on along with about 200 other original pieces of Art!  Since Scott was liberated, Helen has set out to uncover and amass these hysterical historical artefacts.

The collection has been exhibited on several occasions, and with the support of The Chapel St Precinct, the collection can be seen again along with the many new additions, all worthy of winning the “Itchiball Prize” (sic)!
